About the Anime
Although the Gate was once sealed, it was later reopened through the efforts of First Lieutenant Yoji Itami of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). It now remains under the exclusive and strict management of the Japanese government.
Since then, the JSDF has been dispatched to the Special Region, the vast world on the other side of the Gate, to take part in cultural exchanges with the locals and conduct surveys. Because this land holds its own unique cultures and environments, the JSDF must act carefully to avoid disrupting its balance.
Meanwhile, Petty Officer 2nd Class Hajime Tokushima, a former chef now serving in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), travels under the command of Captain Goro Edajima across the Avion Sea. Aboard the Kitashio, an Oyashio-class submarine, they navigate distant waters untouched by Japanese influence.
Their mission is to infiltrate the trading nation of Tinae and rescue an American journalist who has been abducted in the area.
Along the way, they encounter Princess Primera Luna Avion of Tinae, Shura no Arch, a descendant of a family of righteous pirates, and Odette Ze Nebula, an Avi maiden who serves as Ship Guardian. Before long, the five begin working together as a team.
However, the region is plagued by war, as neighboring island nations and pirate fleets clash for dominance. To make matters worse, the seas are home to Armored Whales and other unknown creatures, pulling the crew into struggles beyond their imagination.
Faced with challenge after challenge, will Tokushima, Edajima, Princess Primera, and their companions overcome the dangers before them and complete their mission?

Worldview
Princess Primera's homeland, "Tinae, the Beautiful Jewel of the Blue Sea," is also a prominent commercial nation, but piracy has become a serious crisis. Merchant vessels are unable to set sail, and the nation's people suffer greatly as supplies dwindle. To address this issue, Tinae, lacking sufficient military strength, seeks the aid of the Shiraf Navy on the condition that Princess Primera is married off in exchange for their cooperation.
However, resolving the pirate crisis is far from simple. The ambitions of the Seven Islands Unification Movement, the intrigues of the Avion Monarchy Restorationists, and the existence of a formidable hidden power have intertwined to complicate matters further. Amidst these conflicting schemes and volatile tensions surrounding the Avion Sea, Etajima, Tokushima, and the Maritime Self-Defense Force soon find themselves caught in the midst of this chaotic storm…
A Letter from Animation Producer #1
Hello everyone,
My name is Hattori, and I'm the Animation Producer at Studio M2, in charge of the production of GATE 2: Tides of Conflict.
Thanks to Oshi, I've been given this rare opportunity to share updates with all of you directly while the production is still in progress.
I hope this gives you the feeling of being part of the creative journey, walking alongside us as we move toward the broadcast.
For this first letter, I'd like to talk about one of the most essential parts of anime production: the script meetings.
Each meeting brought together about 10 to 15 members, including:
- The direction team: the Director and Assistant Director
- The writing team: Series Composer Mr. Urahata and the scriptwriters
- The original team: Author Mr. Yanai and the staff from Alphapolis
- The committee team: Kasagi and Oshi
- The production team: GENCO and Studio M2
We began by creating the series composition, essentially the framework of the story.
For this new season, we discussed how to adapt the second volume of the original series, how to pace the story across episodes, and which moments to highlight most.
Mr. Urahata, who also served as the Series Composer for Season 1, drafted the initial composition plan.
From there, the team exchanged ideas and refined the structure together.
The process for individual episode scripts follows a similar flow.
Mr. Urahata prepares a rough plot draft, which is then reviewed and discussed with the directors before being assigned to the episode's scriptwriter.
For this season, we've assembled a reliable group of staff members specializing in military supervision and historical research for the Special Region.
Thanks to them, our director was able to focus fully on how to bring out the drama and emotion in the TV series.
It's also been incredibly valuable to have Mr. Yanai, the original creator, involved. He has contributed not only to the scripts but also to early stages of art and character design, where his feedback has been truly insightful.
As you enjoy the broadcast, I hope you'll take notice of how the episodes are structured, where the focus shifts, and how each story connects to the larger picture.
If you rewatch it a few times, you may begin to see the creative intentions behind the staff's decisions throughout the series.
At the time I'm writing this letter, all scripts have been completed, and we're moving forward with setting design and storyboards.
Since we were able to announce the second season early, we've been feeling both the excitement and the healthy pressure from everyone's reactions. That energy pushes us to make the best series we can.
Thank you so much for your continued support.
We're still in the early stages of production, but every word of encouragement means a lot to the entire team.
Please keep cheering us on and look forward to what's coming next.
Hattori
